5 Ways To Make Exercise More Fun
It’s been stated by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, that less than 5 percent of adults actually participate in physical activity each day. There are lots of ways to make exercise fun, yet that isn’t always the easiest thing to do. To help, here are some of our top suggestions to put the fun back into your exercise routine as well as some strategies to do so!
Follow These Steps
One: Make a plan with a friend
We tend to do better when we have someone else to hold us accountable to our own actions. The best way to do this is to get a like minded friend to exercise with you! This way when you’re supposed to meet them at the gym, take a class, or go for a jog there is someone on the other end that you could potentially let down if you don’t show. The power of guilt is a strong one ;).
Two: Join a Class
Try something new! The class environment is very different from working out alone or with a friend in the gym. The class setting has a different vibe, the energy forces you to push yourself harder (in a good way). Ever been at the gym alone doing an exercise for a goal of 60 seconds? The exericse is REALLY hard, your muscles are burning and you stop at 56 seconds. I’m guilty of this. In a class… You’re going to push it the full 60. The instructor and your peers will make sure of it. That’s the difference.
Three: Find an Active Hobby
You can stay active without realizing it by finding an outdoor or indoor activity that keeps you active. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean showing up to the gym in a traditional sense. Go hiking, biking, running, snowboarding, skiing, skating, swimming, etc. This will give you all the benefits of exercise while not dealing with the monotony of counting reps and timing rest periods.
Find a competition or contest and sign up for it! It ads a different level of accountability when you have something as daunting as a half marathon, a triathlon, or an obstacle course race coming up on the horizon. Not only will the constant remembrance of “Shit, I have to swim for my life in like 12 weeks” get you into the pool, you’ll also have a purpose to your training. This allows you to create goals, build a plan, and execute on that plan.
Five: Make a Bet
If you’re competitive and love winning making bets with friends is by far my favorite way of having fun with a training regime. You’ve got skin in the game! Make sure it’s a bet worth while. Options include but are not limited too financial incentives, embarrassing activities, and public shaming. If you know that you’re going to have to run down church street in a bathing suit in the winter for not winning your little contest you’re certainly going to move your ass.
In conclusion exercise is not supposed to be a chore. The idea behind physical activity is that it keeps us healthy, happy, and alive. Do things that you enjoy, with people you enjoy, in a place that you enjoy and hopefully together we can raise the percentage of people exercising on a daily basis, thanks for reading!
